Introduction

Just like trying to capture the Delta on camera, no website could possibly capture the experiences I've had teaching in Mississippi for the past two years.  This portfolio is not a beginning or end, but a snapshot in time; I've only begun my journey here in Mississippi, and my time here hopefully won't be my end.

I began my undergraduate career with a strong determination to complete a degree in secondary education, but money talks, and I switched to a major that would qualify for tuition reimbursement and continued to be involved in local youth through my church.  God had a plan though, and I only threw it off-track temporarily, or maybe I needed a bit of experience before I would be ready to teach.  After almost five years in the corporate world, it was time to leave the sleepy, unfulfilling bank world and drive off the face of the earth into Mississippi.

Like many Teacher Corps teachers, I was a TFA cast-off.  I had applied for the national program with stars in my eyes, but from the moment I walked into the interview I knew that something was very wrong; this was not the program for me.  Apparently, they felt the same way about me, but TFA is kind enough to give its applicants a "resource list" where I found Mississippi Teacher Corps.  It all seemed to fit, as Delta was the only TFA placement that truly appealed to me.  Through a serious of events, including tearing my hair out over Praxis II exams that I thought I had failed (but didn't), pestering Ben, visiting Oxford, and stalking blogs, I finally had an acceptance email.  And so began the next chapter of my frantic life.
